Evening with poet Musa Geshayev in Tbilisi

"Poetry above all!" And as a confirmation of these popular words of great Galaktion Tabidze, on the initiative of the "Fund of Caucasus" and Georgian Writers Union the evening with famous Chechen poet Musa Geshayev took place at Nikoloz Baratashvili House-Museum on March 10, 2010. Unfortunately, recent history of the Caucasus has been full of blood, tears and suffering. The words "Caucasus" and "war" are often perceived as terrible synonyms. But that day was an especial, exceptional day. That day the Caucasians met there and – not a word about politics! There, in the heart of Georgia, in the center of old Tbilisi guns became silent.

Creative intellectuals – writers, poets, painters, scientists, as well as representatives of Georgian Orthodox Church and students met there in order to become acquainted with creative works of the poet.

President of the "Fund of Caucasus" Givi Gambashidze opened the evening. He introduced Musa Geshayev to the audience and asked Makvala Gonashvili, Chairwoman of Georgian Writers Union, to speak. Her speech became a surprise for the poet, since M. Gonashvili read one of his poems in Georgian – it was the first and up till now the only translation of M. Geshayev's works. In conclusion M.Gonashvili delivered the Honorary Diploma of Georgian Writers Union to the guest.

The importance of such meetings for the spiritual enlightenment and enrichment of the society was emphasized in the speech of clergyman Father Zurab (Tskhovrebadze). He gave his blessing to the activities of the "Fund of Caucasus" and Georgian Writers Union.

Chechen poet was welcomed by his colleagues – Georgian poets Koba Arabuli, Badri Kutateladze and Givi Shahnazari. Expert on the Caucasian issues Mamuka Areshidze and publicist Gulo Ananiashvili told about the centuries-old brotherly relations between the Chechen and Georgian peoples.

Another guest – Eduard Khachukayev, one of the Heads of all-Russian public movement "Russian Congress of Caucasian Peoples", who accompanied the poet in his trip, warmly and emotionally told about his friend.

The audience listened to the poet with great interest. Musa Geshayev in a few words told about himself, his creative plans and then read a great deal. His poetry proved to be very close and understandable to the Georgian listeners. The poet's works in poetical form reflect pain and nobility of people, firmness and a great kindness of mountaineer's soul.

The meeting lasted for four hours. Musa Geshayev looked freshly and was satisfied with contacts with the audience. But the end of the evening was the most pleasant for the poet: he was surrounded by the young people for a long time, and only the twilight falling onto the city announced the ending of a poetic holiday.

In addition to the mentioned meeting, the "Fund of Caucasus" suggested a rich cultural program to Chechen guests for the whole period of their visit to Georgia. Following the Caucasian tradition to respect the ancestors' memory, the guests began the sightseeing with the Pantheon of writers and public figures on Mtatsminda mountain in Tbilisi. They came into contact with the antiquity of Georgia while viewing with great interest the exhibits of "Gold Fund" at Georgian State Museum. The guests were especially delighted with the ancient capital of Georgia – town of Mtskheta with its majestic temples Svetitskhoveli and Jvari – unique monuments of Georgian architecture. The guests attended at the performances of Folk Dance Theatre "Nabadi" and Tbilisi Dramatic Russian Theatre named A.Griboyedov; visited the exhibition of applied art arranged by the Embassy of Japan to Georgia.
