Traditional international scientific conference "Archaeology, Ethnology, Folkloristics of the Caucasus"

Traditional international scientific conference "Archaeology, Ethnology, Folkloristics of the Caucasus" was held in Tbilisi on June 24-28, 2009.

Delegates arrived on June 24. That day, the guests made sight-seeing a tour all over the city, visited Sh.Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts, Open Air Museum of Ethnography and Mtatsminda park. Plans of caucasiologists’ future collaboration were discussed at the meeting that took place at the "Fund of Caucasus".


The conference was opened at the Georgian National Academy of Sciences on June 25. President of The Georgian National Academy of Sciences Academician Tamaz Gamkrelidze applied to the conference participants with an opening address and then held a session.

Member of Parliament of Georgia Nugzar Tsiklauri applied to the conference with welcoming speech and read out the letter by Parliament Chairman David Bakradze addressed to the conference participants. The head of Azerbaijan delegation Maya Ragimova and the head of Armenian delegation Lilia Vardanyan read out respectively the addresses of President of The Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Academician Mahmud Kerimov and President of The Armenian Academy of Sciences Academician Radik Martirosyan to the participants of the conference.

The head of Dagestan delegation Mamaykhan Aglarov read out the letters by President of Dagestan Scientific Center of The Russian Academy of Sciences, Director of Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography, Corresponding Member of The Russian Academy of Sciences – Khizri Amirkhanov, Adviser to The Russian Academy of Sciences, Corresponding Member of The Russian Academy of Sciences – Akhmed Osmanov and Vice-Director of the Institute – Omar Davudov. M.Aglarov handed the diploma of honorary citizen of Khunzakh (Dagestan) to President of the "Fund of Caucasus".

In their speeches, Manglisi bishop Anania, State Minister of Georgia on Diaspora Issues Iulon Gagoshidze, Academician Roin Metreveli, Director General of The Georgian National Museum David Lortkipanidze, Director of Archeological Research Center Besarion Maisuradze and Chairman of Commission for Scientific Collaboration with countries of the Caucasus at The Georgian National Academy of Sciences Vakhtang Shamiladze noticed the significance of this international scientific conference. Givi Gambashidze – President of the "Fund of Caucasus", Co-Chairman of Commission for Scientific Collaboration with countries of the Caucasus at The Georgian National Academy of Sciences, made a speech on behalf of steering committee of the conference, where emphasized the role of scientific relations in the strengthening of unity of Caucasian peoples.

The first plenary session of the conference was held at Georgian National Academy of Sciences under the chairmanship of Academicians Roin Metreveli and Otar Japaridze.

The next plenary sessions were held at The Georgian National Museum. The conference was closed on June 26. Vice-Chairman of Parliament of Georgia Rusudan Kervalishvili made a speech at the closing session.

258 papers were submitted to the conference from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Russian Federation – Dagestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Tatarstan and Moscow, including joint papers (Armenia-Poland, Georgia-Azerbaijan, Georgia-Bulgaria, Great Britain-Germany). Collection of papers will be published in autumn of 2009.

It was decided at the conference to apply with a declaration to Presidents of Caucasian countries and UNESCO governing body for rendering assistance in study and protection of a unique cultural heritage of the Caucasus.


The steering committee suggested a cultural program to the participants of the conference. On June 27, a sightseeing tour to Kakheti took place which included visit to Signagi town, visiting of Al.Chavchavadze House-Museum in Tsinandali, the residency of Georgian King Irakli II, Telavi Museum of Local Lore and Shuamta. On June 28, the guests visited Mtskheta – the ancient capital of Georgia, viewed historical monuments and visited sacred places.

On June 28, participants of the conference departed from Tbilisi.
